I Bought A Cow!

I did, I bought a cow yesterday. A full grown heifer, this one will be grass fed and free from all the hormones and antibotics used in the meat industry.
Over the last three or four years I have been gradually moving toward purchasing organic food. I try to buy my beef, chicken breasts, milk and eggs organic.
The least expensive way to purchase beef is to buy a side. It actually works out to be cheaper than buying the “regular” meat at the store. While it cost more all at once, over time we end up saving quite a bit of money compared to buying the meat (full of antibiotics and hormones) at the grocery.
My parents are taking half and I will have the other half.
For those of you thinking, will she take the front half or the back half. Neither, I will take a side of beef. I can’t wait for my freezer to be full of good meat! I call and let the butcher know how I want it cut up. Steaks, roasts, hamburger, swiss steaks, stew meat, Yummy!
If you are in the Indiana area and are interested in purchasing beef let me know.

I just want to know…have you met the cow? I wouldn’t be able to stand that, even though I love my steak and burgers…
No, I have never met the cow. Although, if it has lips like the one in the pic, I may have to refuse it.
That’s so awesome, Lis!
If A and I were able we’d love to do this.
And jumping on your bandwagon and taking over, organic food is good, but LOCAL food is better! (like your hoosier cow)
25% of fossil fuel consumption is in the Industrial Food Chain. I could start rambling now…
Anywhoo……
Go ahead ramble on….. In fact, why don’t you write a post and I will put it up?
Whoever is taking care of it….ask them to corn feed it the last month or so. It takes away a lot of the game flavor / texture
Homegrown has a lot less flavor & a different texture. You may have to cook it a little differently until your fam gets used to it.

I’m not sure what they give it at the end. I have bought a side from these people before and I actually thought the meat tasted the same as when I bought premium meat from the store.
I have heard that it really depends on how they feed and treat the animal. I would have been bummed if it was did
They probably are feeding it corn at the end. That’s the cheapest way to get good tasting meat.
We’ve done this many times since my Dad has so many cattle we usually just pay for butcher & wrapping. Great way to save money!

I’d love to know more about the cow. We’ve been in Indiana for 3 years now, but haven’t bought a side of beef since we’ve been here!

God will punish you for eating this animal. Do you really enjoy the taste of bloody flesh from a cow?
Farm fresh beef is the only way to go. Having grown up raising cattle and with parents still doing so, my wife and I do not buy beef in a grocery store.
Ask your butcher about Flat Iron steaks, they are cut from what would normally be a shoulder roast and are (IMHO) even better than Filet.
